This policy explains what personal information riaanroux.co.za collects, why, and what you can do about it. I have kept it short and in plain language.
Who is responsible
The Riaan Roux Show is run by me, Riaan Roux. I am the responsible party for this website under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and I act as its Information Officer. You can reach me through the contact page.
What I collect
When you use the contact form. I receive your name, your email address, your subject line and your message. I use them to read and answer your message, to follow up a tip, or to fix a mistake you have pointed out. I do not add you to a mailing list.
When you visit the site. Like every website, the server that hosts this site records your IP address, the type of browser you use and the pages you request. I use these records to keep the site running and secure. Failed login attempts are also recorded, to block attacks on the site.
Cookies. The site uses a small number of cookies. Some are needed for the site to work, such as the one that remembers your cookie choice. The cookie banner lets you accept or reject the rest, and you can change your choice at any time with the cookie button at the bottom of the page.
Other companies involved
Some parts of this site are provided by other companies. When your browser loads them, those companies receive your IP address and may set their own cookies.
- YouTube (Google). My videos are embedded from YouTube, and article thumbnails are loaded from YouTube. Google’s privacy policy applies to what YouTube collects.
- Google Fonts. The typeface on this site is loaded from Google.
- Akismet (Automattic). Messages sent through the contact form are checked for spam by Akismet. Your name, email address, message and IP address are sent to Akismet for that check.
- My web host and email provider. The site and the messages you send me are stored on their systems.
Some of these companies store information outside South Africa.
What I do not do
- I do not sell or rent your information to anyone.
- I do not run advertising trackers or visitor analytics on this site.
- I do not publish your name or your message without asking you first.
How long I keep it
I keep contact form messages for as long as I need them to deal with your message or with the story it relates to. After that I delete them. Server records are kept for a limited period by my web host.
Your rights
Under POPIA you can ask me:
- what personal information I hold about you;
- to correct it if it is wrong;
- to delete it;
- to stop using it.
Send your request through the contact page. I will answer as soon as I reasonably can.
If you are not satisfied with my answer, you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.
Changes to this policy
If I change how the site handles personal information, I will update this page and change the date at the top.
